G-8 Summit Focuses On Climate Change, Oil Prices

Leaders of the Group of Eight industrialized nations has begun their annual summit at the lakeside resort to discuss climate change and other global challenges, including stabilizing a world economy battered by skyrocketing oil and food prices.

Topping the agenda will be the creation of a new international framework to replace the Kyoto Protocol, the global warming treaty set to expire at the end of 2012.
This year's summit brings together leaders from 22 nations, the largest number yet. African heads of state joined the G-8 leaders Monday to discuss economic development and other issues affecting the continent. The G-8 nations agreed to consider a long-term goal of slashing carbon dioxide emissions 50% from 1990 levels by 2050 at last year's summit in Germany. The question this year is how much progress they can make on setting that target. Among the G-8 members, European countries and Japan support the long-term goal, while the U.S. has balked at the proposal, insisting that China and India should be part of a mandatory framework.
